More about Pepis Pepi’s was originally built to take about twenty dogs but now has more than fourty, with the sick and injured dogs being cared for in the house. Many of the dogs that arrive at Pepi’s are badly injured, or have been ill treated and are traumatised by their experiences. Chika was such a dog. She was a small cross breed and was brought in by his Spanish owner who asked if some tick spray could be put on the dog. Clearly the dog was very sick indeed and absolutely covered in ticks. It collapsed and Alan and Jane knew that it had to go straight to the vet, where it was put on a drip immediately. The vet said that the ticks had taken most of the blood from the dog and unfortunately she died two days later, with the life’s blood having been literally sucked out of her. The owner then refused to pay the vet bill, saying ‘no perro, no paga’. In this case the vet was very understanding and did not try to get the money from Alan or Jane, but in many other cases the refuge would have to pick up the bill for similar situations. Seville was another dog taken to the refuge in a terrible condition. She was taken by the refuge vets and had a broken back leg as well as other injuries. A specialist vet was called in and fortunately the leg was saved and with lots of care and attention she began to put on weight. Seville has now been re-homed in Helsinki , Finland and is doing very well in her new home. The total cost of treating this dog was more than 400 euros.
